Classic Zambian Safari Lodge: Kafunta River Lodge is a classic Zambian safari lodge and combines all the essentials for a great safari. Here you will find the rest and peace you need after an exciting day on safari in combination with personalized service and a warm welcome by our team.

At Kafunta River Lodge, each of the luxury private chalets and the main lounge & dining area overlook the game rich flood plain. Beyond the plain is the Luangwa River and one of the best game viewing areas of the magical South Luangwa National Park, the premier park in Zambia and one of the best national parks in all of Africa.
Our eight private safari chalets have been built on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs. They are tastefully decorated with African style and charm. All were refurbished in 2014 to a high standard. Additionally, there are two luxury suites which feature a private deck, an upstairs viewing veranda and a luxurious bathroom.

View the Plentiful Wildlife
Game drives take place every morning and afternoon and are accompanied by Kafunta’s qualified safari guides. During these safari activities we take you through the South Luangwa National Park in open 4×4 vehicles, where you are able to observe indigenous mammals and birds of Zambia as well as migrant birds.
The morning safari starts at sunrise after a light breakfast. In the briskness of the morning with its special light you are able to observe the abundance of wildlife of the South Luangwa National Park. During the safari we stop for a short tea-break and return to the lodge for a delicious brunch around 10:30 o’clock.
Be One with Nature
The walking safaris are a great opportunity to be at one with nature. Our qualified and highly experienced safari guides and armed national park rangers will escort you safely into the true and unspoilt African bush during these safari activities. The Luangwa Valley is one of the few places in Africa where it is possible to walk amongst wildlife, which allows you to fully immerse yourself in African impressions, smells and sounds.
During this activity our guides provide you with detailed explanations of spoors, vegetation and the ecology in general – an unmatched wildlife experience that will leave you with lifelong memories.
Explore a Hidden World
Our night drives provide the unique opportunity to see a great variety of nocturnal animals and the chance to see lions and leopards as well as other predators in their time of activity and with a bit of luck you might even experience the big cats hunting. The safari starts in the late afternoon and we stop half way through for sundowners while watching the magnificent African sunset, continuing the safari after dusk to see what the night has to offer us.
The night drives are accompanied by our experienced safari guides and spotters, who are skilled in finding a great variety of nocturnal game with the powerful spotlight. We return to the lodge around 20:00 for dinner where you will be able to regale everyone with the day’s events.
The Luangwa Valley, Zambia is the ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers to enjoy the abundant wildlife. These private safaris are tailor-made to your interests, for which we provide the exclusive use of our vehicles and guides. In total solitude and away from other tourists you can immerse yourself in the African bush.
This way, you can take as much time as you wish at each sighting, for pictures and in-depth observation, or spend the whole morning or afternoon at a sight to observe wildlife movements and interactions in more detail. These custom-made safaris need prior arrangement and are at an additional cost.
Personalized Bird Watching
South Luangwa National Park, boasts over 420 of Zambia’s 732 species of birds.
This includes 39 types of birds of prey and 47 migrant species so whatever the season, the South Luangwa National Park is an excellent bird watching destination.
Our guides will lead your personalized safari.
The most recommended and interesting time for bird watching is from November to May when the birds have their breeding plumage and the migrant birds visit the Luangwa Valley.

Taking your family on safari is a unique and unforgettable experience that brings families closer together and enables you to enjoy the unspoilt Zambian bush with your loved ones. Especially our younger guests who are fascinated by the wildlife and eager to learn about wildlife habitat and the habits of animals.
Keeping other guests’ comfort and relaxation in mind, we cater for families with children under the age of 12 with their own game drive vehicles and separate tables at mealtimes during these custom made safaris.

Kafunta River Lodge
The first days are spent at Kafunta River Lodge which offers the opportunity to discover the game rich Mfuwe area and relax in a classic safari lodge overlooking a floodplain and the South Luangwa National Park.
The camp offers rustic accommodation in grass and reed huts built on stilts that ensure safety from wild animals and provide an unlimited view of the Luangwa River.
The lodge has a private park entry that leads to a beautiful corner of the park not used by many safari operators.
The central location of Kafunta River Lodge allows us to explore vast areas of South Luangwa National Park. Game activities at Kafunta River Lodge include game viewing in open vehicles and unique night drives which offer the opportunity to view nocturnal animals.

A Zambian Bush Camp Offering
an Authentic Wilderness Safari
Island Bush Camp offers untouched wilderness and walking safaris in the heart of South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. This authentic Zambian bush camp is set under the cool shade of old mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River.
With views that stretch from the Chindeni hills in the Eastern corners of the Luangwa Valley to the Muchinga escarpment in the West, you are presented with the complete natural boundary of this remote and achingly beautiful wilderness. Every day is presented with new experiences and never the same.
Island Bush Camp is located around 3 hours South of Kafunta River Lodge. On the way to reach this safari bush camp you drive through the South Luangwa National Park, passing through woodland and open plains.
Bush Camp Chalets:
Island Bush Camp has just 5 bush chalets tastefully decorated in a simple, chic bush style. They are open to the front with stunning views over the river and allow the sounds of the bush to drift through. Each chalet is built out of natural materials and sits on a wooden platform high off the ground. Cosy beds are turned down each night behind tented mozzie nets.
Each chalet has an en suite bathroom on the same level as the rooms also facing the river. The bathroom is open to the sky, with a stylish and practical canvas bucket shower, that is filled with hot water once a day. There is cold running water and flush toilets.
THREE RIVERS CAMP
Three Rivers Camp is the latest addition to the Kafunta Safaris’ portfolio and is set at the confluence of the Luangwa, Kapamba and Lusangazi Rivers in South Luangwa, Zambia. The stylish tents lay under shady sausage trees and are facing either the Luangwa River or the game-rich lagoon
Sitting in the cozy chairs near the dining area, you will have boundless views of the Luangwa River and the Kapamba River, with their white beaches where hippos love basking in the sun. Or choose to rest on the plush day beds on top of your private viewing deck and observe giraffes and waterbucks strolling down to the lagoon. Bordering the national park, the area around camp is unspoiled and teeming with wildlife and offers unrivalled game viewing.
